What is Youth Rules!?
Youth Rules! is a national initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Labor in May 2002 to increase public awareness of Federal and State rules concerning young workers. Through the Youth Rules! Initiative the DOL and its partners seek to promote positive and safe work experiences that help prepare young workers to enter the 21st century workforce. Youth Rules! is an innovative approach to bring teens, parents, educators, employers, government, unions and advocacy groups together to ensure young workers have a safe and rewarding work experiences.
What is the Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair?
As part of this national initiative, a Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair is being sponsored for youth 16 to 21 years of age seeking summer employment or entering the workforce after High School and provides employers an opportunity to reach out to hundreds of potential employees. The Youth Rules! Rally also provides an opportunity for students, their parents, and employers to interact with agencies such as the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to learn more about laws regarding hiring of minors.

Note that a minimum age of 16 is required to apply for job opportunities.

What is different for this year's event?
This year the age range for the youth attendees has been changed to 16-21 to allow employers access to potential employees in their hiring age range. Also, entrance has been limited to the first 6,000 students who register for the event. Students will be allowed entrance to the event at 1,500 students per hour. Each student will be required to attend the "Danger Zone" exhibits to learn about teen safety before they are eligible for prizes.
How many prospective applicants will there be?
In 2007 the 4th Annual Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair brought 6,000 eager youths seeking employment. This year information will be sent to high schools throughout the greater Houston area and the number of attendees remains limited to the first 6,000 registered students.
Where and when is this event?
The Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair will be held at the George R Brown Convention Center, First Floor Hall "B", on Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 9AM to 2:30PM.
What will this cost me?
The event is free but you have to register! No one will be allowed in without a pass. Parking runs approximately $7 for surface lots and $15 for the garage.
What will the Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair look like?
The rally job and career fair will consist of various Danger Zones exhibit areas which will equip the teens withe the hazard recognition skills necessary to identify hazards in the workplace. There is also an employer and exhibitor booth area to enable employment seekers to interact with individual employers.
